New Program of a Cohousing Community Inserted into the Southern Hangar
A new proposed program for the Tempelhof building with be a cohousing community for the refugees to move into. This new program will inhabit a portion of the hanger and a new added space that intersect the current building. This cohousing community will serve as a place for refugees to be able to continue old traditions and have a place where they don’t feel out of place since they have a community of others that can support them. It will also serve as a place that continues to allow refugees and citizens of Berlin to communicate and create connections. The bottom portion of this cohousing complex will be an open area that can house anything from farmers market to football games open to all citizens of Berlin. In the era of the Nazis the roof of Tempelhof was built angled to allow for seating and viewing of events that could occur on the field, and stair towers to the roof were started but never finished. In this new design the stair towers will be completed so that the roof can be used for seating and viewing as originally intended. The events held on Tempelhof will yet again be a place for refugees and citizens to come together.
