Recent Trends in Home Entertainment:
Streaming

The large screen and surround sound system in a cinema are technologies that produce an immersive experience that is not feasible in an average home. However, the unexpected social enjoyment of sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers is an experience that defies the traditional demographic boundaries of life, that cannot be replicated in at home. For this very reason, the future of movie theatres as we know may be in jeopardy.

The growing production and exhibition of movies through streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Disney plus, and other pirated sites offer cheaper and and easier viewing methods for cinematic, experiences. In addition, there are less and less people going to theatres today due to traffic, timing, higher prices, and the rudeness of others, and now social distancing. For these reasons, the customization and convenience of home viewing have undermined the social value of the cinema and have instead encouraged individuals to experience these forms of entertainment as private experiences in the home. To the extent that these experiences are shared ones, they are limited to individual’s pre-existing social networks, such as immediate family members and friends.
